I’m interested in research funding. Where can I apply?
Apply for AFI funding via the following channels:
- Research Grants, Early Career Grants and Cross Border Grants

I won’t be able to start my project on January 1 or July 1. Can I request a start shift?
- Researchers may postpone the start of the project by up to six months.
- If a different start date was already specified in the grant application, you must still apply for and obtain approval for a start shift.
- A retrospective start shift may be possible under certain circumstances.
- Requests for a start shift must be sent to the scientific administration via email. Please submit an official request as a PDF file.
Can I reallocate funds from my project?
- Researchers may apply for a reallocation if they wish to spend funds differently from what was originally specified in the application.
- Researchers must apply for a reallocation if they spend more than €2,000 on items other than those originally planned (in terms of expenditure categories).
- Requests for reallocations must be sent to the scientific administration via email. Please submit an official request as a PDF file.
I would like to submit my annual report. Where can I find the templates?
- AFI’s scientific administration sends the templates for the annual progress and financial reports to you individually at the end of each project year.
I’m the PI and will leave my current institute. Can I continue my project at a new institute?
- The grant is awarded to your research institute, not to you individually. Therefore, the awarded institute must agree to the transfer of the project. Please contact AFI’s scientific administration before leaving your institute.
I’m the PI but will leave the project. Can a colleague take over?
- The grant is awarded to your research institute, not to you individually. Therefore, the institute must agree to the appointment of a new PI. In addition, the contracts with AFI must be re-signed by the new PI. Please contact AFI’s scientific administration before leaving the project.
We are encountering major difficulties and cannot carry out the project as planned. Do we have to terminate the project?
- AFI is aware that research does not always proceed as planned and that experiments may lead to dead ends. If serious problems arise and it becomes clear that the project cannot proceed as planned, please inform AFI as soon as possible. A deviation from the project plan does not automatically mean that the project must be terminated. AFI aims to support research, not hinder it.
- Different rules may apply to partner organisations. If you are a (Co-)PI of a Cross Border Grant project, please also contact the other PI’s funding organisation (Alzheimer Nederland, Fondation Vaincre Alzheimer or BrightFocus Foundation).
Travel Grants, International Training Grants and Publication Grants
I want to apply for a Travel / International Training / Publication Grant. Is there an application form or template?
- There is no application form for Travel Grants and Publication Grants. Please submit your application and all supporting documents as a single PDF file.
- For the International Training Grant, a dedicated application form is available here.
I want to extend my conference trip / international stay for personal reasons (e.g. holidays). Can I still claim travel costs?
- If you are awarded a Travel Grant or International Training Grant and wish to extend your stay (e.g. by one additional week after the conference), AFI will still cover the costs of your return flight or train journey, provided the costs are comparable. However, AFI does not cover any additional accommodation. Please inform us at the time of application if you are planning to extend your stay for personal reasons.
The conference I want to attend is not dementia-related. Can I still apply for a Travel Grant?
- It is important to AFI that the applicant’s research relates to Alzheimer’s disease or Alzheimer’s-related dementias. This should be evident from the submitted conference abstract and the grant application letter.
- If this is the case, the AFI Travel Grant may also be used to attend a conference that is not directly related to dementia.
Can I apply for the Publication Grant to finance the publication of a review article?
- The Publication Grant cannot be used to cover the costs of a review article.
