Grants for open access publications

Publication Grants

The Alzheimer Forschung Initiative e.V. (AFI) supports early-career researchers in publishing their work in open-access journals.

Open access to the latest research findings is a particular priority for AFI.

  • Publications on the subject of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are funded with up to € 1,000.
  • As a charitable organisation, AFI aims to facilitate open-access publications and expects that other funding opportunities have been exhausted before an application is submitted. AFI provides funding for any remaining costs after other funding sources have been exhausted.

Criteria and how to apply

Who can apply for the Publication Grant?

PhD candidates and researchers who have not yet reached a senior position are eligible to apply for an AFI publication grant. Applications may be submitted throughout the entire year. Multiple applications per person for different publications are possible.

What is the funding amount?

It is possible to apply for grants amounting to up to € 1,000. Applications are approved based on a cost estimate but only actual expenses are reimbursed.

What are the conditions to be granted a subsidy?

  • The applicant is a first author or corresponding author and employed at a public state university or public medical centre in Germany or a German institution that belongs to the EMBL, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Helmholtz Gemeinschaft, the Leibniz Gemeinschaft or the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft.
  • The article has significant relevance to research on Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer’s disease related dementia. Since 2025 AFI only funds original research articles and no reviews or comments.
  • The selected journal publishes all articles immediately after publication with open access (True Open Access journal). Open access options for individual articles in journals requiring subscription cannot be funded.
  • The journal fulfils the scientific quality criteria applicable to the respective subject and is peer-reviewed.
  • Authors who publish results from externally funded projects have to check if the publication costs can be covered by third-party funds (e.g. DFG publication cost flat rate or support from the university library) and to exhaust these, if available.
  • Latest 2 months after the open access publication, the applicant has to submit the published paper and an invoice including proof of payment.

Please include a sentence (acknowledgement) in the publication in which you state: "We acknowledge support from Alzheimer Forschung Initiative e.V. for Open Access Publishing".

The following documents are to be submitted:

  • A short application letter on the university's / institution's stationary incl. a short written confirmation that other funding sources have already been exhausted
