Travel funding for conference participation

Travel Grants

The Alzheimer Forschung Initiative e.V. (AFI) supports early-career researchers in attending national and international conferences and congresses.

  • Funding is available for researchers at German universities and public institutions (see specifications below).
  • Funding is available for travel to conferences focusing on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
  • Participation in online conferences is also supported.
  • Funding can only be used for active participation in the conference, for example by presenting an abstract.

Criteria and how to apply

Who can apply for Travel Grants?

  • PhD candidates and postdocs who finished their doctoral studies in the last 2 years may apply for an AFI travel grant. AFI takes parental leave of up to one year per child into account.
  • PhD students may receive the Travel Grant grant once during their PhD studies.
  • Applications for grants can be submitted throughout the year.

What is the amount of the subsidies?

  • Applications can be made for amounts up to €1,000. 
  • The application is accepted based on an estimation but only actual expenses are reimbursed.
  • Please check AFI’s Travel Grant guidelines for costs that are not covered by the AFI Travel Grant. 

What are the conditions for receiving a travel grant?

  • The applicant is employed at a public state university or public medical center in Germany or a German institution that belongs to the EMBL, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Helmholtz Gemeinschaft, the Leibniz Gemeinschaft or the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft. 
  • Active participation in the congress through a talk or a poster if possible 
  • The application has to be submitted not later than 1 month before the start of the congress 
  • The applicant’s institution has no available financial means to fund the congress participation 
  • Latest 2 months after the congress, the applicant has to submit an invoice including proof of payment as well as confirmation of abstract acceptance and a brief summary of the congress participation. All documents must be written in German or English. If invoices and in particular proof of payment are written in another language than German or English, this must first be clarified with AFI. 

How to apply? 

  • The following documents are to be submitted: 
  • A short application written on stationery of the applicant’s university / institution 
  • A cost estimate covering travel, participation and accommodation expenses with proofs 
  • The abstract submitted to the congress and the acceptance by the congress if available if active participation is possible 
  • The applicant’s CV 
  • A list of other sponsors if present, including the respective sums
