International Training Grants
The Alzheimer Forschung Initiative e.V. (AFI) supports research of Alzheimer´s (AD) and related dementias (ADRD) and promotes international collaboration in this field. To meet these aims, AFI offers a Training Grant Program that encourages scientists to build international research networks with other research institutions including laboratories in different countries. Applications for Training Grants can be submitted at any time. Applicants will be notified within two weeks of submission.
Training Grants can be used to
- Work in the host laboratory with collaborators
- Extend visits to the host laboratory
- Extend existing fellowships from other organizations
It can be applied for up to €5,000 to cover travel and accommodation costs.

Criteria and how to apply
Who can apply for the International Training Grant?
- Training Grants support scientists from German state universities and public institutions who would like to do a research internship in a host laboratory as well as international scientists who would like to do a research internship at a laboratory of a German state university or research institution.
- The applicant is employed at a public state university or public medical center in Germany or a German institution that belongs to the EMBL, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Helmholtz Gemeinschaft, the Leibniz Gemeinschaft or the Max-Plank-Gesellschaft.
- The international training grant is open to doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers (up to 6 years after obtaining their doctorate and without a professorship) who are working in the field of Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
Are there any limitations?
- The period of the training is 4 weeks to 3 months. The period is justified on the need to perform experiments or use facilities that are not available at the own institution.
- Training Grants can only be used for one visit to the host laboratory.
- Training Grants are not rewarded retroactively. The applicant has to wait for the notification of the grant.
- Applicants can only apply once a year. Application deadline is 1 month before the start of the training.
- The candidate has to take care of visas by their own.
What is the amount of the subsidies?
- It is possible to apply for grants amounting to a total of € 5,000. The application is accepted based on an estimate, but only actual expenses will be reimbursed. The payment will be made in two steps: 50% of the total amount will be paid immediately after approval and 50% after AFI has received the report and invoices.
- Latest 2 months after the training has ended, the applicant has to submit invoices including proof of payment, as well as a short report. All documents must be written in German or English. If invoices and in particular proof of payment are written in another language than German or English, this must first be clarified with AFI.

- An official confirmation letter of support with details about the duration of the employment contract signed by the supervisor of the home institution The applicant has to submit proof of the contract with the home university or institution.
- An official confirmation letter or invitation signed by the supervisor of the host institution.
